About IGC 2017

The aim of the Indian Geotechnical Society (IGS) is to endorse and uphold cooperation among engineers and scientists for the progression and dissemination of knowledge in the fields of Soil Mechanics, Foundation Engineering, Soil Dynamics, Engineering Geology, Rock Mechanics and allied fields and their practical applications. This society provides a common forum for academicians, researchers, designers, construction engineers, equipment manufacturers and other professionals interested in Geotechnical activity. For the advancement and betterment of geotechnical engineering in the North-Eastern (NE) region of India and to promote interaction among geotechnical engineers of the North Eastern Region of India, “IGS Guwahati Chapter (NE)” was established in 2005.

Annual General Sessions of Indian Geotechnical Society (IGS) are held in different parts of the country. In the early years, Technical Sessions were organized along with the General Body Meetings. Later, these were developed into Symposia. From 1978, regular Annual Conferences have been organized and now they are known as Indian Geotechnical Conferences (IGC). Details about old conferences can be found at http://igs.org.in/conferences.html

About Guwahati

The gateway to the northeast and largest cosmopolitan city in the region, Guwahati serves as the starting block for most Northeast itineraries. It’s a somewhat featureless city – a prosaic heap of glass and concrete for the most part – but there are a scattering of interesting temples to explore. Walk its back alleys and old quarters, however, and you will be able to salvage a generous amount of local flavour that lingers amid its suburban sprawl of ponds, palm trees, small single-storey traditional houses and old colonial-era mansions. Guwahati is one of the main tourist hubs in Northeast India. The city boasts of a centuries-old Kamakhya Temple atop Nilachal Hill, an ancient Umananda Temple located at Peacock Island in the middle of the Brahmaputra river and the Brahmaputra itself which is one of the largest rivers in the world. The city has many ancient Hindu temples, along with newly built ones, earning it the sobriquet "City Of Temples". Hence the city is aesthetically, culturally and commercially developed. Tourism in Guwahati includes heritage sites, ancient temples, museums, historical monuments, archaeoloIGCal sites, lakes and ponds. EcoloIGCal sustainability are complementary aspects of the common goal of improving the quality of life.
